Utilizing the waste of coal-fired power plants

25/04/2017

According to preliminary calculations, a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 1,200 MW daily emits about 4,000 tons of fly-ash cinder, of which, there are 85% of fly-ash.

The environment is polluted by the dust of cinder dump areas

Meanwhile, according to the Power Master Plan VII, by 2020, the total capacity of Vietnam coal-fired power plants will be 36,000 MW, and 72,000 MW in 2030, that is equivalent to consume more than 100 million tons of coal, and 30 million tons of ash per year emitted into the environment. These are the input materials for the cement and non-fired building materials industry. In Vietnam, basic building materials such as cement, ceramic, porcelain, glass ... are produced and consumed largely, but the rate of using non-fired building materials is very low, even in lower rank some neighbor countries such as Laos, Thailand and Malaysia.

Although our country has abundant mineral resources for building materials, but this is a non-renewable resource, so it will be exhausted sooner or later, while the utilization of waste, especially ash from coal-fired thermal power plants are under-valued. In fact, coal-fired thermal power plants are designed to build cinder yards for several years. However, thorough treatment of this emission source is almost unsatisfacted. The majority of these areas are mainly designed to bury, and there is no plans to make use of cinders. Taking the case of Vinh Tan 2 thermal power plant as an example, the transports of coal slag to waste treatment sites and poor management of environment are causing severe dust which are affecting thousands of households. At present, only thermal power plants near the cement plants or non-fired brick factories can consume these wastes. For example, in Pha Lai thermal power Plant, there are four units that regularly buy cinders for treatment, but it is also not frequent due to the high selling price of waste and some of them still has to be buried, which is very wasteful.

Currently, the Government has been promoting the production and consumption of non-fried building materials. Therefore, more attention on the utilization of waste from coal-fired power plants should be paid. In terms of planning, thermal power plants should be located near cement plants or vice versa to take advantage of each other's products. The cement industry is one of the major electricity users and is also the consumer of fly ash cinder by coal-fired power plants.

In the upcoming time, a series of thermal power centers will be built across the country, which means that there are a huge increase of emissions. If there is a synergy among localities, ministries, industries and enterprises, these sources of waste will be utilized through the factories of non-fired building material. This has helped to develop non-fired building materials, save resources, and gradually change the people’ habit of using clay bricks, as well as ensure a sustainable development environment.

Setting priority for clean energy investment
Vietnam would increase its attractiveness in foreign investment by developing green energy. That is the confirmation of many delegations attending the meeting on the free trade agreement between Europe and Vietnam organized by the European Business Association in Vietnam.
The green growth – The only way
According to Mr. Nguyen The Phuong, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, in order to develop renewable energy for green growth, the government should support electricity price from renewable energy because of higher price than thermal electricity, and hydroelectric.
Recycling waste – a resource has been left open
The recycling and reuse of waste resources are trends applied in many countries, contributing to environmental protection and resource savings. However, the recycling waste has not now been adequately paid attention.
The Government encourages investment in renewable energy
Striving to the year of 2030, electricity production in Vietnam from renewable energy will account for 30% of the national energy structure. Therefore, the Government encourage investment in renewable energy.
