The new generation of wind energy technology

Modern wind turbines are more and more economical and reliable, as well as have increased the capacity of many megawatts (MW). The average turbine capacity has increased dramatically since 1999, the turbines installed in 2016 have an average capacity of 2.15 MW. A study conducted by the US Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) has contributed to improving this process by developing longer and lighter blades, taller towers, more reliable transmission systems and optimization control systems.

 

Over the past two decades, this office has worked hard to develop a number of sample technologies, many of which have become commercially feasible. One example is the project on 1,5 MW wind turbine of GE Wind Energy. Since the early 1990s, WETO has worked with GE and its predecessors to test parts such as blades,generator  and control systems on turbine designs and launch the 1.5 MW GE turbine model. This design makes up more than half amount of wind energy generator produced commercially in the United States and is the main competitor in the global [wind turbine] market.

 

Developing components

 

WETO has worked with technology partners to improve the performance and reliability of components in the system. The blade production units of Knight and Carver in California have worked with researchers at the Sandia National Laboratory’s Energy Division to improve blades that create 12% increase in wind energy efficiency. The most outstanding feature of the Sweep Twist Adaptive Rotor(STAR) is that one its end is slightly curved, unlike most other blades used,which are specially designed to make maximum use of any wind speed, including in case of slow wind speed.

 

To improvegearbox availability, WETO has recently worked with a number of companies todesign and test the innovative transmission systems. With a $ 47 million grantfrom the US Department of Energy, the most state-of-the-art wind energy testfacility opened in Clemson University to accelerate the new generation of windenergy technology, reduce costs for manufacturers and improve competitivenessfor US companies.

 

Innovation in the design and manufacture wind power components continues to be an important factor in achieving the national goal. According to the result of this project,The Wind Energy Technologies Office of the US Department of Energy and Advanced Production Office are collaborating with public and private organizations to produce equipment, typically use a 3-D printer to produce blades. The traditional way to design this part is to create the connectors, or a full sizeof  blade sample for making the mold.Producing connectors is one of the most costly and time consuming processes in making blades, therefore, creating a 3D printer saves a lot of money and time.

 

Researching the utility of turbine

 

The National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NWTC) has pioneered the improvement of turbine components, turbine systems and turbine model methodology which are accelerating the industry. The facility offers a number of test websites, energy meters, on-site production resources,and structural validation capabilities.

 

The research at NWTC complemented the electron (A2e) atmosphere initiative of DOE, which aims to significantly reduce the cost of using wind energy through the improvements of adjusting the wind flow and wind farm. The research on new generation wind energy at NWTC,which uses fluid dynamics to develop simulations for wind farm applications and other modeling and control tools, which helps operators reduce the impact of turbine effect by studying the plant’s performance within full range of atmospheric conditions.

Utilizing the waste of coal-fired power plants

The Government encourages investment in renewable energy
Striving to the year of 2030, electricity production in Vietnam from renewable energy will account for 30% of the national energy structure. Therefore, the Government encourage investment in renewable energy.
