Floating solar energy - the future technology

In the world market, only a small number of companies are focusing on the floating solar energy market."The floating market is a growing one," said Mr. Yossi Fisher, Chief executive of Solaris Synergy (Japan), a pioneer in the field of floating solar power. There are many places in the world where there is no land for solar power projects, mainly islands in Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the Philippines and many other places. In general, the cost of using the water surface is much lower than the cost of land use. Nowadays, there are big demands of solar power in Japan, USA, Korea, Australia, Brazil, India and other countries. This demand is expected to increase and will spread throughout the world. “There is an excellent combination of floating solar power with hydroelectric dams because of available infrastructure such as power grids, working labor, road systems. With this technology, solar power systems installed on the water surface benefit from a considerably lower environmental temperature due to evaporation and cooling of water. The sturdy aluminum frame also transfers cooler temperatures from the water, reducing the overall temperature of the modules.

 

A research conducted by the Korea Water Resources Cooperation has shown that the floating solar energy systems have outperformed the standard solar systems installed on the ground by 11 percent. That is a significant difference. Another notable study underway is the Comparative Study of floating solar energy systems at Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore  (SERIS). The Singapore government is conducting the largest ever comparative study among the floating solar systems managed by SERIS. The $ 11 million project will be organized in two phases over a four year period. In phase one, started in 2015,10 floating solar power systems were deployed, with a capacity of 100 kWp per each system. Phase two, starting after the systems of the phrase one have been relatively tested for several months, and will expand another 2-3 MWp.

 

With more than three quarters of the Earth’s surface covered by water, a reasonable question would be the deployment of floating solar systems on the sea. Is this feasible? The answer is that if solar panel manufacturers are not ready to provide rigorous assurances of solar panels installed on the sea, we can use “dedicated military batteries” for these projects.

 

In Vietnam, on March 3rd,2017, a Korean solar power company, Solkiss Company, organized a study tour of Thac Ba Hydro power reservoir in Yen Bai to prepare for the construction of a floating solar power plant. During a conference in May 2017, Electricity of Vietnam Group said that it is considering a series of solar projects in the hydro power reservoir area managed by EVN. In particular, there are some typical projects such as the project on Tri An reservoir of 126MW (Dong Nai), project on Sesan lake 4 with capacity of 47MW (Gia Lai) and project on Da Mi lake with the capacity of 47.5MW (Binh Thuan). With the availability of large surface areas, grid infrastructure and  human resources,  the investment in floating solar-power project combined with hydro power reservoir is now the best solution in the context of limited land areas.

 

In terms of floating equipment technology,  The National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NARIME) is also working with other companies to study the equipment system for floating solar power plants, including: floating buoy system, anchor system; materials for making floating buoys, standards, methods of checking mechanical strength, durability overtime; plans for production, connection and installation of buoy systems in the field; Machinery and equipment for making and installing buoys; calculations for designing and applying anchor and standard systems ... So, it can be seen,floating solar technology is giving attractive clean energy value for Vietnam in the context of high energy demand as well as the traditional electricity generation technologies are polluting at the alarming level.
